Tips for First Time Homebuyers

We know purchasing your first home is an exciting time, but also understand that the process can be a bit daunting. This is going to be one of the most expensive purchases you will make; however, it will also be one of your greatest investments. Arterra agents have put together a few tips to help educate and ease the minds of those who are ready to buy their first home.

1. Always have the representation of a buyers agent. They know the process of purchasing a home—forwards and back. They know how to negotiate and will get you the best value for your home. Oh, and you don’t have to pay them a nickel. -Rory Macdonald

2. Get your finances sorted out—Get pre-approved before looking at houses so you know what your budget is. Make sure you speak to a credible lender and get second opinions. -Todd McNulty

3. Know your priorities with what you want in a home. Don’t waste your time looking at something you know you don’t want. -Rory MacDonald

4. It’s never too early to start looking at potential homes. The process can take time, so start now. -Nusrat Hussain

5. When you see a home that you like, contact your agent and schedule a showing within the same day. The market is HOT and homes sell quick. If you wait, you could miss out on your opportunity. -Chad Hagar

6. If you happen to stop by an open house alone, make sure to specify you already have an agent. -Nusrat Hussain

7. Do not make another large purchase while in the process of looking for a home, even if it has a zero down payment or zero percent interest. A large purchase, such as a car, could adversely affect your ability to purchase a home.

-George Shaheen

8. Know the importance of your inspection period. Hire a professional for your inspection and consult with your real estate agent to decide if any additional negotiation needs to take place. -Chad Hagar

9. While having moral support is always important, remember, at the end of the day, you are searching for YOUR home! Try not to let anyone talk you out of a home that you love, or talk you into something you're not going to be happy with. -Nikki Trombley
